PHASE 1 — WORDPRESS FOUNDATIONS · MODULE 4 OF 11
Pages: Finding & Editing Existing Pages
By the end of this module you will be able to find any page on your website and open it in the right editor — and recognize the two different “edit” doors Avada gives you.
What you’ll learn
- Open the Pages list and find a specific page quickly
- Understand Published vs Draft status
- Open a page for editing — and recognize the Avada Builder when it appears
- Know the two editing doors: Edit Page (back-end) and Edit Live (front-end) — and which one this training uses
- Back out of an edit screen without saving anything
Step-by-step instructions
- From the dashboard, click Pages in the left menu. Every page of your website is listed by title.
- Finding the right page: use the search box at the top-right of the list, or sort by title. The page powering your homepage is usually called “Home”. If two pages have similar names, check the status column: Published pages are live for visitors; a — Draft label means it is unpublished and invisible to the public.
- The safest way to find the right page: browse your live website to the page you want to change, then use the black admin bar at the top — it has edit links for that exact page. No guessing in the list.
- The two edit doors — this matters:
- Edit Live — opens the page looking exactly as visitors see it, with editing controls laid over top. This is Avada Live, and it is the door this training uses from Module 5 onward.
- Edit Page — opens the back-end editor, where the same page appears as labelled boxes instead of the real design. Nothing wrong with it — but as a beginner, use Edit Live, where you can see what you are doing.
- Click Edit Live now, just to look. The page loads with a toolbar of controls — this is the Avada Builder interface you will learn next module.
- Backing out without saving: close the browser tab, or use the toolbar’s exit option. If you accidentally changed something, Avada will ask whether to save before leaving — choose Don’t Save and nothing you did counts. Remember: nothing is permanent until you deliberately save. (Saving properly is Module 9.)
What you should practice
- Find your “About” page (or any page you know) two ways: via the Pages list search, then by browsing the live site and using the admin bar.
- Open it with Edit Live, look around without clicking anything in the page, and exit without saving.
- Check the Pages list for any Draft pages, so you know what is live and what is not.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Editing the wrong page. Similar titles (“Services” vs “Our Services — old”) trip everyone. The browse-then-admin-bar route from step 3 makes it impossible.
- Using Quick Edit from the Pages list. It edits titles and URLs, not content, and changing a page’s URL breaks links to it. Skip it entirely.
- Changing a page’s title or slug casually. The title may appear in menus and the slug is the page’s address. Content edits: yes. Title or address edits: ask GM&F first.
- Clicking Trash on a page. Trashed pages vanish from the live site instantly. If a page seems unneeded, tell GM&F instead.
- Panicking inside the editor. You opened it; you can always leave without saving. The exit is always there.
